With Christmas coming soon, plus all the preparations and events this season brings, it is a busy time of year! But, protecting the investment you have in your home is still a priority. Winter House Cleaning and Maintenance Checklist

ceiling fans blade direction to direct cool/warm air

  1. Clean out your gutters and check drainage. Keep excess water away from the foundation.

  2. If you have a fireplace, be sure to clean the chimney.

  3. Check condition of heating system – clean or replace furnace filters and clean out air ducts.

  4. Keep cold air out – check for any leaks, especially around doors and windows. Replace weather stripping around doors or re-caulk windows if needed.

  5. Protect flooring by placing throw rugs at entryways.

  6. Cover bare floors with decorative rugs to help retain heat and keep your feet warm.

  7. Check your ceiling fans. For most ceiling fans, the blades should be moving in a clockwise direction for winter to help push the warmer air down. Switch to counter-clockwise in the spring to drive the warm air up. Now is a good time to dust these fixtures too!

  8. Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and replace batteries if needed.

  9. Inspect plumbing and pipes for any leaks.

  10. Drain and maintain your water heater.

  11. Pay attention to your trees – for some this is the best time to prune. For safety and to take care of your roof, remove dead branches or any that are close to touching your home.

Fortunately, we don’t have the snowfall or weeks of freezing hazards that other areas have to deal with! According to the NOAA, La Niña will be occurring again, which will result in less rain and warmer temperatures for us this winter. Still, these cleaning and maintenance tips can help you save on energy costs and prevent problems that winter can bring.
